Roof Repair Case Studies: Poor Choice of Decking Material Leads to Problems Down the Road – Roof Repair in Middletown, CT

Challenge

While re-roofing a home in Middletown Connecticut we ran into some roofing material that we could not remove from the OSB (or oriented strand board) that was installed as decking. Many contractors use this for sheathing because it is cheap, although it is by no means ideal for exposure to the humidity, freezing cold and other such variables in roofing applications.

Solution

Rather than replace the OSB with a similar, low cost low functionality material, we installed brand new CDX plywood where the decking materials needed to be replaced. Many contractors would have left the material adhered to the OSB decking rather than removed it as well, while that would save time and money, many warranties would not be valid if the roofing materials were installed on anything but a clean surface. Make sure the roofing contractor you choose only uses the best quality materials, like the Owens Corning Total Protection Roofing System.
